History

Christians have met in Mitcham Junction for over 100 years...

History is a great to look back and at learn from. There have been many great and some even famous people that have lived and worked in our area. This page is a summary of the history of the Gospel Hall.

The 1800's ...

The church that now meets in the Gospel Hall began in 1896. The old Cyprus Hall, at the back of Cyprus Terrace, Mill Green Road was where it all began with a few Christians holding special meetings. A few people started gathering there for Sunday evening Gospel Meetings and Tuesday evening Bible studies. The Breaking of Bread and Gospel meetings were held once a month. A year later in May 1897, the Sunday School started.

In the early part of 1898 the brethren in Wallington advised these brethren to start meeting on gathering according to Biblical doctrine. They started with the Breaking of Bread every Sunday morning, Gospel Meetings on Sundays and Bible Readings on Tuesdays.

The 1900's ...

They moved from Cyprus Hall to Hackbridge Hall, Hackbridge on 7 th May 1910. Where one of our previous members (Miss F. Busby) was baptised on 23 rd February 1911.

They then moved to the Gospel Hall, Percy Road, Beddington Corner on 16 th July 1928.

A bimonthly gospel leaflet had been produced and distributed in the area since 1966. This ceased early in 2020.

The 2000's ...

The Sunday School has been running for many years with numbers fluctuating. The patience and perseverance of the members of the Assembly has kept it going with only breaks for holidays. Trips to the seaside have been arranged over the years and other events to keep the children together. Modern technology has enabled us to run it during the pandemic, but it is now good to be back at the hall. We have been encouraged with new faces coming.

Resent years have  seen a few changes with the introduction of online and seasonal events. The local fete at a nearby housing estate was well attended. Free Bibles have been made available at the front of the hall and handed out at the Fete. Some that took one had never had a bible before.

It is the desire of the Assembly that we may continue to be a light in a dark world and tell everyone in the area about the Lord Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the World.
